3.3 - Government information access - Corporate and administrative reporting

Overall status:
On-track

This commitment is to undertake work to make reporting of Government corporate and administrative information more discoverable and accessible through digitisation.

Corporate and administrative reporting information is currently located on individual agency websites or in hard copy, making it difficult to compare and contrast documents. The Department of Finance is working to make reporting information more discoverable and accessible through the digitalisation of this information.

Current status

The Department of Finance is developing a pilot of a digital corporate and administrative reporting platform that will demonstrate the benefits of digitalisation of this information. The platform is currently under development and is focused on presenting digitalised annual reporting information from a small number of Commonwealth Entities. The Pilot is being developed using GovCMS (Drupal) architecture and leverages other existing resources, such as Data.gov.au.

Our aim is to complete the development of the pilot and undertake broad consultation to receive feedback that will inform the scaling up of this development. Annual reports are an important accountability document tabled in the Parliament. The Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit (JCPAA) sets the contents of Annual Reports through the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Rule 2014, made under the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013.

Finance appeared before the Joint Committee on Publications-Inquiry into printing standards for documents presented to Parliament, on 22 June 2017. At the hearing, Finance described this pilot and how discoverability and accessibility of government information can be enhanced by having Parliamentary documents in machine-readable formats, and through the sharing of data on sites such as data.gova.au assists including the Parliament and other stakeholders. The Digital Service Standard and the electronic tabling of Parliamentary documents were also discussed.
